One of the best things about this series, other than the game play and the characters, the epic trailers. These are amazing.
I have been a fan of Gears of War, well slightly late. 2007, I finally bought the Xbox 360 and the first game on my list to play, Gears of War. I was blown away and kind of addicted, to the characters and the story. I didn’t even get a chance to play any of the multiplayer, because of I played the story multiple times and before I knew it, Gears of War 2 was released. Gears of Wars 2 brought more to the story, continuing it from the first. But, the game brought something even better than the story. The Horde Mode! This was something completely different to me. Sure the Gears series has plenty of the staple multiplayer options, like King of the Hill, Execution, Team Deathmatch and so many others, some invented for Gears alone, like Beast Mode, which you take control of the Locust Horde. Horde mode is a co-op multiplayer game mode, where you team up with up to 4 friends and take on the Locusts or the Swarm in many waves and each are more difficult. So much fun.
Gears of War is known for having great visuals, great enemies and bring the cover system in to play. The world of Sera is gorgeous, Earth like world with the architecture of the ruined cities is a kind of gothic /greco roman architecture. The enemies emerged from under the ground and they are called the Locust Horde, lead by Queen Myrrah, eventually the Swarm. The cover system is one of the best things to come to the shooter game genre. Being able to tuck behind cover and even blind fire with Lancer assault rifle. Oh, I haven’t mentioned one of the other things that makes Gears unique, the weaponry and it extends beyond the Lancer. There are ink grenades and so many different explosive weapons exclusive to Gears.
The Gears of War series is so great and only on the Xbox 360 or Xbox One. So, being who I am, and I love to rank things, this is the reason for this article. To rank all six Gears of War games. I will be considering Gears of War and Gears of War Ultimate Edition as the same game, because essentially, they are the same. Ultimate edition does have some extra scenes and is cleaned up a bunch from its original release. So, here we go with the rankings.
6. Gears of War: Judgement (2013)
This story is a prequel to the first game and the story is, just ok. They didn’t change much, but took Marcus out of the story and added a few different multiplayer modes. It is Gears for sure, but it was one I only played through one time and did not care for the multiplayer.
5. Gears 5 (2019)
Like the Star Wars, they are focusing on the new cast, the young newcomers. But, they changed the gameplay a little, and made it more open world than linear, which to me…was no good. The story was ok overall and the multiplayer is, not much different. My favorite, Horde mode is still there but, strange and different enough to take me out of it. But, eh, it is continuing the story in a weaker way than the first 3 games.
4. Gears of War 4 (2016)
It was exciting to come back to the world of Sera after 2011’s Gears 3. Sure, some of us came back in 2013 for Judgement, but it was so forgettable, I forgot about it. They story was new, different and for the most part welcome, it played, once again, like Star Wars, nostalgia reigns supreme for sure. It follows, Marcus and Anya’s son JD and his friends. We do get to revisit older characters, and it is Gears to its core, but, eh not bad.
3. Gears of War (2006/2015)
The first game begins with the beauty destroyed world of Sera and if it doesn’t grab you, you’d never get it. When you chainsaw your first grub, there is no other feeling. The one thing this one lacks for me, Horde Mode. But, it is the first entry to a long story and it is a good starting point, but not the best.
2. Gears of War 2 (2008)
This is the game that introduced Horde mode! But, the story really gets deeper, literally. The story begins to show so much emotion between the characters and has a great ending. I did mention Horde and when I played Gears 2, wow, this added so much game play for me. I have never been a big multiplayer…player, but Horde is all about teamwork, which I love!
1. Gears of War 3 (2011)
It took three years to get Gears of War 3 and it did not disappoint. The game play was sharper than ever and they found a way to improve the Horde Mode. Of course, they added new forms of multiplayer. The story, the story is so emotion and epic, there is a great balance of both throughout. This game hits on so many levels and was the perfect way to end the series, which, it didn’t. Gears of War 3 is the best Gears game, by far.
So, that is it. The ranking of the Gears of War series. This is a game series I absolutely love. I know there will be a 6th game eventually, but almost every game has huge replay potential and that is something I look for in a video game.
