Return! Yes, I am going back and review the Star Wars saga!
Return of the Jedi was released on my third birthday and from what my mom had told me, I was there with her in the theater. It is hard to imagine seeing any Star Wars film for the first time after growing up with them. I feel lucky and but at the same time, I wish I could go in from Episode I and see them all in order all over again, in order.
Return of the Jedi was different for me growing up. I was really not focused on the Ewoks like a lot of people, still. It was more of the introduction of the Emperor. Even as a small child, I guess I was drawn to the Dark Side, Darth Vader is so cool and then we get a guy who shoots lightening out of his fingers. Palpatine, always gave me the creeps and as I got older, I realized how amazing is character is. To me Revenge of the Sith really helps show how awesome Palpatine is, manipulating both sides into basically working for his “greater good”. He may be one of the best written villains of all time.
The rest of the movie is great and to some their favorite and in my experience, people chose either Empire or Jedi. The thing about Jedi that I loved, was the final battle with the Ewoks on Endor and the space battle, other than Revenge of the Sith’s opening sequence, Jedi has a great space battle. The ground battle is pretty amazing also, with the Ewoks little force and the Rebels together fighting to take down the evil Empire, by the way, I love the AT-ST or the chicken walkers. The film is great and it is hard to place it in the series if I had to rank it among the original six films.
Of course, I have to go back to when I saw the films in the theater, mostly because I was 3 when Return of the Jedi was released. So, the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi, to me was the most changed. First, Jabba’s Palace and the musical number was changed and extended for what reason? One of the good things, we saw more Boba Fett, it was not much, but we saw his suave side. I will say the Blu Ray releases were harder to watch, mostly because of the Vader “No!” at the end. I still loved the film and the song at the beginning and the end, Ewok celebration did not affect the film too much, the story is still there and hell, it is Star Wars.
Return of the Jedi has been out for 36 years and there are some fans who still do not like the film. I don’t get that at all. Knowing there are more film to follow Return of the Jedi, the ending and the Ewok celebration loses its effect of wrapping up the series and bidding us fair well from the Galaxy far, far away.
But, I still absolutely love Return of the Jedi. In my personal opinion, Return of the Jedi ranks 4th of the current 10 films, which includes, Solo and Rogue One.
One last note, I love this title. Originally, the title was supposed to be Revenge of the Jedi, but Jedi do not seek revenge. So, this title, Return of the Jedi works in two ways. Sure, there is the obvious, the return of Luke Skywalker. But, what about the return of Anakin Skywalker? Yes, Luke helped redeem his father and he died Anakin Skywalker, not Darth Vader, so in returning to being Anakin, he returns as a Jedi. I love it!
